Great Decisions: Ruptured Alliances and the Risk of Nuclear Proliferation

Great Decisions is a nationwide, non-partisan program sponsored by the Foreign Policy Association intended to broaden public involvement in foreign affairs. It was launched over 50 years ago, and today tens of thousands of participants take part in discussion groups each year. Our library is proud to be hosting our eighth year of participation in the Great Decisions Program. Eight topics have been selected this year for discussion. The Foreign Policy Association provides a Great Decisions Briefing Book if participants choose to read articles in advance, and each program begins with a video presentation outlining the issues of the evening’s topic. After the short video, a facilitator provides insight and leads a discussion. This free, in-person program will take place in the Lake Travis Community Library meeting room in Lakeway. There is no registration required.

Ruptured Alliances and the Risk of Nuclear Proliferation
U.S. alliance skepticism may drive countries like Japan and South Korea to reconsider nuclear options. What are the implications of the Trump administration’s rethinking of the U.S. alliance system for regional and global security? Will this new uncertainty alter the way allies and rivals in various regions make decisions about security and nuclear weapons?

“With Candid Indifference and Finality of Tone” Exhibit Closing and Artist Talk

“With Candid Indifference and Finality of Tone” intermingles the Texan infrastructure with the body to explore American healthcare brokenness. Larkin draws parallels to collective loss and healthcare disproportionality through personal experiences with grief and chronic illness. The imagery invokes sensations of spatial occlusions, construction sites, industrial catastrophes, and unreliable memories. Our bodies, cut off from access when sick, are like the particularities of our environments, where one works in less than ideal conditions - under invisible powers. Larkin asks: what happens when an insurance entity can, with candid indifference and finality of tone, dictate the path and extent of your life?

Karen Limbaugh has been a photographer for many years; starting with a film camera and moving on to a digital camera. She says "I enjoy photographing landscapes, flowers, and doing macro photography. I am branching out and trying my hand at street photography. I have had the opportunity to travel over the last several years across the United States and abroad. Asynchronous STEM Girl Day Landmarks Scavenger Hunt

Works of public art have the capacity to resonate deeply, stimulate curiosity, and inspire the imagination in unexpected ways. At The University of Texas at Austin, the public art collection is one of the most distinguishing features of the main campus, shaping impressions and offering a distinctive setting for memorable experiences.

As the university’s public art program, Landmarks enriches the lives of students and visitors by presenting art that is broadly accessible and free to all. Some fifty works of modern and contemporary art are throughout the 433-acre campus and viewed by thousands of people every day.

To embark on the scavenger hunt download the STEM Girl Day Landmarks Scavenger Hunt.

As you discover each work in Landmarks' public art collection, investigate it from a STEM perspective:

  • How many beams, boats, or mountains make up the works of art?

  • How is the art made? What materials were used and why?

  • What engineering or physics was used to create the sculptures?

  • What other science, technology, engineering, or math might have been used to design, create, build, manufacture, or place the art?
